Answer

|
Why is GSU starting a Computer Stars competition? |
The goal of the Computer Stars competition is to encourage
student learning as part of the State's initiative to foster the
creation of a Technology Corridor in south Georgia. |
|
Why is it part of the Math Tournament? |
All the computer majors at GSU (computer science,
information technology, information systems and computer engineering)
have a challenging math component. We want to reiterate the message that
"Math is important!". However, the students in the Stars
competition are not required to register separately as part of a Math team. |
|
Who can participate? |
There are only two requirements: 1) the students must
come from the same school district; 2) every team must have a faculty coach. |
|
Do the students need to take a computer class to participate? |
No computer class is necessary. All lessons and
self-tests are on-line. If students have never used a computer before,
the coach will be responsible for basic computer literacy instruction. |
|
Do we need to install any software? |
Yes, but it is available free on the web site. If you
need help, contact bobcook@GeorgiaSouthern.edu. |
|
How to tell if a student should participate? |
To participate, a student should be committed to finishing
what they start. Secondly, he/she should have good study habits. Third,
read the first lesson and then take the test. How did they do? Reread
the lesson and take the test again. Did the score improve? |
|
How does a student prepare for the test? |
Start reading at Lesson 1 then take the self-test to
assess your learning. Repeat the activity for as many lessons as
possible. |
|
What does the coach have to do? |
The coach is responsible for keeping the students
motivated. We do request that
all questions and problems be e-mailed (bobcook@georgiasouthern.edu) by the coach. We will
attempt to respond as rapidly as possible. |
|
How do we register a team for the Math Tournament? |
See the Math Tourny web site. |
|
How do we register a team for Computer Stars? |
Have your faculty advisor fill out and submit the form on
the Computer Stars home page. |
|
Can a School District register more than one team for Computer Stars? |
Yes, but first priority in choosing 30 teams will be given
to teams from different districts. |
